Life in little boxes

Over four months into the pandemic and here we are, living a life where much of our entertainment is found online. Live comedy, music, art, theater, sporting events. This has been such a strange time with so many unexpected turns.

I feel lucky to be where I’m at. Able to safely work from home for a job I’ve wanted to leave so often in the last decade to follow my passion. But here I am with the steady job to catch me. I can’t complain. I’m lucky. Just missing that passion part. Which feels so extra right now that I should just SHUT. IT.

So I’ve found ways to fill that creative hole in me that’s gotten so big. Teaching has taken a little backseat for me. I’m not driven to that right now. With everything going on between the pandemic and the uprising in our nation, I’m wanting to take a learning and listening approach. It feels important to put my agenda in the trunk and ride in student mode.

It surprisingly has been a great time to reach outside of my usual box. There’s so much going on internationally with improv. Of course there has been for a long while, but now folks seem more connected than before.

Improv jams, workshops and courses are full of people from all over the world. It’s been really special to play and learn and get other perspectives.

I never thought I’d be sitting on my laptop taking a n online class at 2am on a Thursday eve. But here we are. This is life right now.

We’re at home, seeking creativity and connection. And we’re finding it in little boxes on our computers, phones, tablets.

Even with this lovely and surprising method for connecting, some mornings I’m still waking up feeling so heavy and hopeless that I can’t make it to my little box on the computer. And then I feel sad for feeling sad because I’m lucky and should be grateful for what I have.

This is the cycle for many of us. Still I am thankful for these little boxes and the chances to connect. I hope you’re finding ways to connect from your little box in the way that feels best for you each day.
