Improv

Back to the Stage

This weekend I found my way back to an improv stage for the first time since February 2020. An outdoor amphitheater at a high school was not the stage I expected. And just a few weeks ago I had no idea I’d be here. But as we’ve learned this year and in improv in general, you stay open to what’s ahead and enjoy the discoveries.

Before COVID shut everything down last year, I was coaching the Del Norte HS improv team and prepping them for their end of year show. Like so much else in 2020 their show was canceled on the day of. So my setlist and clipboard went into a drawer for a year and just a few weeks ago I learned that I’d get to pull it back out again!

The team was given an opportunity to have their show outside, in masks with a small number of friends and family present. And after a year of not coaching anyone in person, there I was in a park with the DNHS Improv Team like it was no big thing.

It was so fun to work with them and to be a part of their excitement. And after being there for auditions via zoom in the fall, it was so great to meet the new teammates in person.

This show was like nothing I’d ever experienced! Doing improv outside in masks is certainly not ideal, but the team didn’t miss a beat. I’m so proud of how they rolled with all this. They supported each other and had fun. It was wonderful to be a part of!
